Kitesurfing Sardinie: Punta Trettu or Porto Pollo

Written by Loek

Kitesurfing in Sardinia: the two bays of Porto Pollo and the shallow lagoon at Punta Trettu

Kitesurfing in Sardinia comes down to two spots at opposite ends of the island: the shallow, flat lagoon of Punta Trettu in the south-west, and Porto Pollo in the north, where the wind funnels through the strait towards Corsica. They are four hours apart by road and use different airports, so most riders pick one.

Punta Trettu or Porto Pollo?

Punta Trettu is the easier place to learn: you can stand for hundreds of metres in the school zone. Porto Pollo has more wind and more choice, with a dedicated kite bay, but gets very busy in July and August. Each spot guide has the full details: wind per month, kite zones, getting there and where to stay.

When to go

You can kite at both spots from spring to autumn; the score shows how reliable the wind is each month, from 5 to 10. Summer is the peak at both.

Water temperature

From about 14 °C in late winter to 26 °C in August. A shorty is enough in high summer; in spring and autumn bring a full suit. Each spot guide has the month-by-month figures.

Getting to Sardinia

By plane

Sardinia has three airports. Olbia and Alghero serve the north, Cagliari the south. Pick the one closest to your spot: the island is bigger than it looks, and Porto Pollo and Punta Trettu are a long drive apart. Each spot guide shows the transfer from the airport.

By ferry with your van

Many French kiters take the van or car on the ferry: no boardbag fees, all your kites with you, and freedom to chase the wind around the island. Most crossings from the French mainland sail overnight and arrive in the morning.

Prices vary a lot by season, vehicle and cabin. As a guide, a couple with a small car on Toulon or Nice to Porto Torres often pays €150–400 one way in summer; a van or camper costs more. The short Bonifacio to Santa Teresa crossing starts at around €50 for two adults and a car. Marseille no longer has a direct ferry to Sardinia; Toulon is the nearest port. Book early for July and August.

Kite schools and partners

Both spots have kite schools and rental on the beach. At Porto Pollo our partner is The Bros Company; at Punta Trettu it is ProKite Sardegna, which also arranges accommodation.
